Famroot

Privacy Policy

Last updated: 15 September 2026

Famroot is a place to record and share your family's story. This policy explains what Famroot Private Limited ("Famroot", "we") collects, how we use it, and the choices you have. The short version: we do not sell your personal data, and your data is stored on servers located in India.

1. Information we collect

  • Account information: your mobile number, password (stored securely), and optionally your date of birth and an invite code.
  • Content you add: family-tree profiles and relationships, photos and other media, moments, notes, and items you place in your Vault.
  • Information about others: details of relatives and contacts you add to your tree or invite, such as their names, dates, photos, and contact details (see Section 3).
  • Device and usage information, collected automatically when you use the Service: your IP address, device and app details (such as platform, app version, and language), push-notification tokens, request logs, and how features are used.
  • Communications: messages you send to our support or grievance channels.

2. How we use information

We use this information to provide and operate the Service; to send OTPs, invitations you initiate, and notifications; to keep the Service and its users safe, including detecting and preventing fraud, abuse, bots, and security incidents; to understand how the product and its features are used so we can improve them; to enforce our Terms of Service; and to comply with law. We do not sell your data to anyone.

3. Information about other people

Famroot users add information about family members and contacts, including people who do not use Famroot. Users must have the consent of living persons (or of a minor's parent or guardian) before adding their information, and that of anyone they invite before we contact them. Information about deceased persons is part of family history and is not treated as personal data, though we expect it to be handled respectfully.

If you are not a Famroot user and believe information about you is on the Service, you may contact grievances@famroot.com to have it reviewed, corrected, or removed.

4. How we share information

We share information only:

  • With your family and circle: your content is visible to relatives connected to you within seven relationship levels in your family tree, and to the people you add to your circle. Content you contribute to a shared tree may stay visible to those relatives. We plan to introduce finer-grained visibility controls in a future release.
  • With service providers: companies that help us run Famroot, such as SMS and email delivery, cloud storage, push-notification delivery, and security or bot-protection services. They may process your data only to provide their service to us.
  • For legal reasons: where required by law, legal process, or to protect the rights and safety of Famroot and its users.
  • In a business change: if Famroot is involved in a merger, acquisition, or asset transfer, your information may transfer as part of it under this policy's protections.

We do not sell or rent personal data to third parties.

5. Where your data is stored

Your data is stored on servers located in India. Limited information may pass through delivery providers as needed to reach you or people you invite: for example, a phone number handed to an SMS carrier, or a notification token processed by Apple or Google to deliver a push notification.

6. Security

Security and privacy are our top priority. We protect your data with strong technical and organisational safeguards, including encryption and strict access controls, and we apply an additional layer of protection to your Vault. While no online system can be completely immune to risk, we continuously strengthen our defences, and in the unlikely event of a breach affecting your personal data we will promptly notify you and the relevant authorities as required by law.

7. Retention and deletion

We keep your information for as long as your account is active. Given the multi-generational nature of family trees, content you contributed to shared trees may remain with the relatives you shared it with after you leave. You can delete individual content from your account at any time. When you delete content, it becomes immediately inaccessible in the app and is permanently removed from our servers within 90 days. You can also request deletion of your account by contacting grievances@famroot.com.

Because a family tree is shared, deleting your account erases your personal data but does not break your relatives' trees. Where your position in the tree connects other people (for example, as the link between your parents and your children), a minimal placeholder remains in their trees, shown as a "deleted user", holding only the family relationships needed to keep the tree's structure intact. Your name, photos, contact details, content, and all other personal information are removed from it.

Residual copies may persist in backups for a limited period, and we may retain limited records where the law requires or to prevent fraud and abuse.

8. Your rights and choices

You can access and update most of your information directly in your account. You may also ask us to provide, correct, or erase your personal data, withdraw a consent you have given, or nominate a person to exercise these rights on your behalf, by writing to grievances@famroot.com. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Data Protection Board of India.

9. Children

You must be at least 18 to hold a Famroot account. Minors may appear in family trees only as profiles added by an adult who confirms they are the minor's parent or guardian or have that person's consent. We do not behaviourally profile or serve targeted advertising to minors. We are preparing a supervised kids mode that will give children read-only access to their family tree under a parent or guardian's control; we will update this policy before it becomes available.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the Service evolves. For material changes we will give you notice in the product or by message before the change takes effect.

11. Contact and grievances

Grievance Officer, Famroot Private Limited: grievances@famroot.com. We acknowledge complaints within 24 hours and aim to resolve them within 15 days. For general questions, contact support@famroot.com.
